Lotsa mozza in Little Italy! Walking cheese tour!

We will visit at least two bustling cheese shops in the Little Italy neighborhood of lower Manhattan - DiPalo's and Alleva. Both stores have fresh-made ricotta and mozzarella as well as imports of all varieties from Italy.

Here is a link to DiPalo's information. This shop is run by siblings Lou, Sal and Marie. Lou travels and gives seminars on the likes of Grana Padano and Parmigiano Reggiano.

They have a new website, http://www.dipaolosel... Lots of videos of cheesemaking!

Alleva Dairy nearby is the oldest Italian cheese store in America!

Afterwards, we will visit a cafe'/bar yet to be determined. I was just in Little Italy and found several nice places. One famous place I'd like to visit is La Mela http://www.lamelarest..., but to get a reservation, we need rsvp commitments.

I thought this was a lot of fun and La Mela was really great to let us come in with outside food, not to mention Alleva and DiPalo letting us taste so much and walk out with so much. It has been suggested that we do another picnic. Anybody game? Is it too hot outside?

    •  It was kind of chaotic, given that we were visiting cheese shops and then weren't technically at a cheese restaurant afterwards, but I thought La Mela was great for letting us eat food from outside their place, and I didn't expect Alleva and DiPalo to give us so much free cheese!!!! Great fun, as usual.
    •  Elizabeth knows how to host a meetup. Cheese, wine and a great group.
