Martin Johnson, cheese, sports and music expert, may start the year with champagne, but he has vowed to end the year with beer! Those who have attended Martin's events in the past know how fun he is and how perfect his cheeses choices are. This meetup is in Brooklyn, so it will be convenient for those who have been pushing for a non-Manhattan venue. You can purchase tickets at the website below. https://www.brownpap ertickets.com/event/ 89125 Description Many of the best breweries do seasonal beers around the holidays and at our next tasting we will sample the best ones in the best context possible, with cheeses to match! Please join us Tuesday December 8 at 7 at d.b.a Brooklyn, 113 N. 7th St. (in Williamsburg, one and a half blocks west of the Bedford Avenue stop on the L train) for a presentation of seven holiday ales and seven fantastic cheeses chosen to match. I'll talk about the cheese. Ray Deter will talk about the beer. Tickets are $20. Following the tasting we will have the first annual Joy of Cheese Christmas bash. NOTE: No one under 21 years old will be admitted.

Bar Artisanal! No, this isn't Artisanal Bistro, but a new bar in lower Manhattan. They get most of their cheeses through Artisanal Cheese Center, the same place the Bistro does. More info on this meetup to come, but this bar has both a "bar" bar and a cheese bar. If you are into cocktails, they have an interesting selection to pair with the cheeses, as well as wine and beer. Since the Artisanal Bistro fondue was so popular, they now offer a traditional Artisanal blend of Emmentaler and Gruyere and a house blend. It's a gorgeous restaurant with a wide array of cheeses. The cheese menu rotates according to what is in season. People drinking order drinks separately at the bar, but we will pool in for most of the cheese plates. I'll be sitting up at the main bar in my usual Green Bay Packers cheese hat. Bar Artisanal is on 268 West Broadway, NY, on 6th Avenue where it intersects with W. Broadway, 1 block south of Canal St.

Let's try this again! Rain was in the forecast last Satufday, and alas, it didn't rain. It may rain this Sunday, but if you still have your cheese from last weekend, bring it on! I have on hand Lagrein wine-soaked cheese, Beemster XO and Beemster Mustard, Drunken Goat, Manchego, and I will probably buy something else just for fun. We'll be up on the right hand side of the Strawberry Fields entrance. Please bring a dollar or two to defray costs for the plates, napkins and knives and bread that I will have. Bring a blanket, and if you need to, also a corkscrew. IF it rains, and they are forecasting a possiblity of showers, we'll move this meetup to May 24 at 3 p.m. Hope you can make it!

Before the weather gets hot enough to melt our cheese, let's hit Strawberry Fields in Central Park once more. Everyone should bring his or her own blanket or towel as well as one cheese and your beverage of choice. (Once we had lots of cheese, but needed more blankets. Some peope also bring wine.) Central Park is big, but this location is easy to find. Go to the John Lennon Strawberry Fields memorial area at around 72nd and Central Park West. There is usually a crowd there watching street musicians playing Lennon songs. I will have a blanket set up towards the right of the "Imagine" circle. I'll also have forks, knives, napkins, plates, cups, corkscrew, etc. Suggested donation of $1 for supplies and bread that I'll bring Bring about 1/2 lb of whatever cheese you want. I'll have on hand some Drunken Goat, Beemster aged gouda-type, Manchego, Provolone....plus a domestic cheese or two and whatever else I run across. IN CASE OF RAIN!!! Alternate date is Sunday, May 17th, same time, same place.

We miss Martin Johnson! For those of you who can't make the Murray's class next week, Martin Johnson has a blue cheese class coming up. As I recall, his blue cheese class was very popular last time! Below are the details. 10 Degrees - 121 St. Mark's Place is to the east of 1st Ave. and one block north of 7th St. I will be there either right on time or slightly late. You can rsvp on this site just to let people know you will be there, but to reserve your spot, you'll have to pay on the website at the end of Martin's description. You can also pay at the door for $5 more, but you won't be guaranteed a reservation. >>>>> >>>>> >>>>> >>>>> >>>>> >>>>> >>>>> >>>>> >>>> Tuesday January 27 at 7 at 10 Degrees, 121 St. Mark's Place Blue Blue Blue!!! Our third annual survey of six (maybe seven) of the finest blue cheeses in the world balanced by six (again, maybe seven) non blues that will match the sweet whites and ports that are recommended with these superb cheeses. The tasting will take place in the newly redecorated salon room at 10 Degrees. Tickets are $40, $35 in advance via Brown Paper Tickets https://www.brownpap ertickets.com/event/ 50658 If you can't make it on the 27th, he is actually doing this class tonight, Wed. Jan. 14, but I won't be there.

Jenny, class coordinator at Murray's and member of the meetup group, has offered us a discount for the smoked cheese class next week. If you have ever attended a class at Murray's, you know that not only is it informative, but also you really get wined and dined. The instructor is the famous Zoe Brickley. This class is usually $50 per seat, but we get the special offer of $30 per seat. 10 seats left! You can rsvp here, but you MUST contact Murray's and let them know that you are part of the NYC Cheese Lovers Meetup and that Jenny has offered the group a discount. If you sign up on line, you will have to pay the regular price. 212-243-3289. http://www.murraysch eese.com If you miss out on this, there will be another meetup coming up later in the month, tba. >>>>> >>>>> >>>> Smoking Permitted In the chilly winter months, nothing quite hits the spot like the rich, warm, earthy flavor of smoked cheeses. (Believe you me, we're not talking about supermarket smoked Goudas that taste like a couple swigs of Liquid Smoke.) We keep a variety of subtle, nuanced, and truly artful smoked cheeses that are sure to keep you warm this winter. Zoe Brickley, Murray's Affineur and American Cheese Buyer, will teach you all you ever wanted to know about this bold bevy of cheeses. Bilingual class taught in both Standard American English and North American Indian Smoke Signals. When: 01.20.09 6:30 - 8:00 PM Instructor: Zoe Brickley Status: 10 seats available

Take a break from your holiday shopping and window wandering in midtown! Let's go have some fondue and more at Artisanal Bistro, one of the all-time favorites of the meetup! (and yes, it's definitely open this time...) At 32nd Street between Madison and Park. There are no reservations for cheese grazers like us, but we will stake out the bar/bistro area where you can sit right at the bar or small tables. We usually have two or three areas where we share cheese, and everybody chips in equally for the tab. Wine and beer, you order and pay by the glass directly at the bar. I love Artisanal because not only can you order fondues, you can also create your own cheese assortment - which we usually vote on together. One soft, one stinky, one tangy, one cheddary...it is fun to explore and Artisanal always has new cheeses to try.

September is the perfect month for outdoor cheese tasting in Central Park! It's also my birthday month (9-9-67), and I want to celebrate with a smorgas-cheese-bord! Everyone should bring his or her own blanket or towel as well as one cheese and your beverage of choice. (Last time we had lots of cheese, but needed more blankets.) I'll have on hand some King Ludwig Beer Cheese, Beemster aged gouda-type, Beemster with mustard seeds, aged Mahon and Piave....plus a domestic cheese or two. IN CASE OF RAIN!!! Alternate date is Saturday, Sept. 20th, same time, same place.

We always love Artisanal for their great selection of cheeses. Although there have been some requests for a picnic this month, I think it's too hot! Instead, let's go see what's new at Artisanal's cheese counter. My latest obsession has been cheeses from the Iberian peninsula (Spain and Portugal), especially those made of sheep's milk, like the soft and gooey Serra da Estrela and Torta del Casar. They are rich and creamy, but also fresh and light tasting with herbaceous note. Spain is best known for Manchego, but there are many more cheeses to explore. Artisanal has a great selection from both Spain and Portugal, and of course, wine to match! I will make a hand-out for Spanish and Portuguese cheeses and there will also be a prize drawing! 32nd St. between Park and Madison

Lotsa mozza in Little Italy! Walking cheese tour! We will visit at least two bustling cheese shops in the Little Italy neighborhood of lower Manhattan - DiPalo's and Alleva. Both stores have fresh-made ricotta and mozzarella as well as imports of all varieties from Italy. Here is a link to DiPalo's information. This shop is run by siblings Lou, Sal and Marie. Lou travels and gives seminars on the likes of Grana Padano and Parmigiano Reggiano. http://newyork.citys earch.com/profile/71 16564 They have a new website, http://www.dipaolose lects.com! Lots of videos of cheesemaking! Alleva Dairy nearby is the oldest Italian cheese store in America! http://www.allevadai ry.com Afterwards, we will visit a cafe'/bar yet to be determined. I was just in Little Italy and found several nice places. One famous place I'd like to visit is La Mela http://www.lamelares taurant.com/contactu s.htm, but to get a reservation, we need rsvp commitments.
